Hochgrat (1834 m) is the highest peak of the Nagelfluhkette range and the entire Allgäu foothills, known as the local mountain of Oberstaufen. Its remarkably symmetrical ridge shape and distinctive banded rock layers visible from the north make it one of the most recognizable summits in the region.

The summit offers a sweeping panorama - on clear days you can see the entire Lake Constance, Ulm Minster, and even distant peaks like the Zugspitze, Großvenediger, Silvretta, and Switzerland's Tödi and Säntis massifs. In summer, the slopes burst with rich alpine flora including gentians, alpine asters, and silver thistles, while winter transforms the mountain into a popular ski touring and piste skiing destination.

How to reach the summit

• Parking at the Hochgratbahn valley station — standard route, about 2 h to the mountain station plus 30 min to the summit, moderate difficulty
• Via Simatsgund to the Brunnenauscharte (2.5 h), then 45 min to the summit; also reachable from Gunzesried Säge (about 3.5 h)

Practical information

• The Hochgratbahn cable car takes visitors up to 1708 m, significantly shortening the ascent
• The Staufner Haus (1634 m), an Alpine Club hut, is open almost year-round near the summit
• Avalanche danger exists in winter — a fatal avalanche accident occurred here in 2009
• The summit cross, erected in 1901 from riveted steel strips, resembles the steel-frame style of structures like the Eiffel Tower

A curious detail: in some years, melting snow patches on the northeast face form the shape of the number 1927 — most strikingly in that very year, sparking local folklore.
