Perched atop Kőris-hegy, the highest peak of the Bakony mountains at 709 meters, the wooden three-story Vajda Péter Lookout Tower rewards hikers with one of the widest panoramas in the region. It's a classic stop for anyone walking the Országos Kéktúra, Hungary's famous long-distance trail.

Kőris-hegy takes its name from the ash forests (kőris) that blanket its slopes, and it holds the title of the highest point in both Veszprém County and Central Transdanubia. The area feels wild and peaceful, with dense woodland giving way to open views from the tower platform. In spring and summer the forest is lush and shaded, autumn brings rich color to the canopy, and winter clears the branches for even sharper long-distance views.

• Bakonybél — Országos Kéktúra (blue trail), about 5 km northeast, moderate difficulty

Practical information

• From the top of the tower you can see Lake Balaton, the witness hills of the Tapolca Basin, Somló, and on clear days Győr, Székesfehérvár, the Vértes and Gerecse hills
• A HungaroControl long-range air traffic radar station stands on the summit as well

The current tower dates from 1920, was rebuilt in 1962 and reinforced in 2002, while nearby the Odvas-kői Cave holds the oldest written reference to a cave anywhere in Hungary, mentioned in a royal charter from 1037.
