The Red Tower is the oldest surviving building in Chemnitz and one of the city's proudest landmarks — older than Dresden, Berlin, and even Chemnitz itself. Standing 35 meters tall, this medieval watchtower has witnessed centuries of history right in the heart of the modern city.

Built from reddish porphyry tuff back in the late 12th century, the tower's warm color gives it real character against the surrounding contemporary architecture. It's a striking sight any time of year — sunlight brings out the red stone beautifully in summer, while winter evenings sometimes see the tower specially illuminated for city celebrations. Because it sits right in the city center, it's an easy and rewarding stop for visitors exploring Chemnitz on foot.

Fun fact: the classic 1968 fit dish soap bottle was actually designed after the shape of the Red Tower, and since September 2007 the tower represents Chemnitz on the German edition of the Monopoly board.
