The Glückaufturm is one of Germany's most distinctive lookout towers - a steel lattice structure styled after a mine headframe, rising from the spoil heap of a former coal mine. It's a place where the region's mining heritage meets sweeping panoramic views.

Standing at 487 metres above sea level on the Deutschlandschacht heap in Oelsnitz in the Ore Mountains (Erzgebirge), the tower's open steel framework is a direct nod to the area's coal-mining past. From the top platform, roughly 25 metres up, you get a wide view over the surrounding hills and former mining grounds. The heap itself, partly overgrown with greenery, has a raw, industrial atmosphere that feels especially striking on sunny days when the steel structure contrasts with the green slopes, and in autumn or winter when visibility tends to be clearest.

Built in 2000 to a design by the Leipzig architecture firm Bernd Sikora, the tower won the BDA-Preis Sachsen award in 2001 for its striking architecture inspired by the region's mining legacy.
