The Bismarck Tower in Glauchau is the tallest surviving Bismarck tower in Germany, standing 45 metres high and serving as the unmistakable landmark of this Saxon town. Perched on the Bismarckhöhe hill southeast of the town centre, it has drawn visitors for over a century with its sweeping views.

Around the tower stretches a long rectangular clearing lined with evenly spaced trees, encircled by a path that makes for a pleasant stroll before or after the climb. From the viewing platform, 39 metres up, clear days reveal a panorama stretching all the way to the Battle of the Nations Monument in Leipzig and the Fichtelberg peak in the Ore Mountains. In spring and summer the surrounding greenery frames the sandstone tower beautifully, while autumn and winter give the hilltop a sharper, more dramatic character well suited to photography.

• Glauchau town centre — via Lichtensteiner Straße heading out of town, roughly 15-20 minutes on foot, easy route

• 197 steps lead up to the viewing platform
• An additional six-metre rotunda with 28 more steps sits atop the platform

• The ground floor houses a memorial hall for World War I victims, with stained-glass windows dating from 1928

A fun detail: many old postcards show a Bismarck relief above the entrance, but it was never actually installed on the tower.
