Zadni Mnichowy Stawek is the highest-altitude lake in the Polish Tatras — and therefore in all of Poland. Sitting at around 2070 m above sea level, it hides in the Dolina za Mnichem valley, on the Zadnia Galeria Cubryńska, a spot reserved for only the most determined mountain wanderers.

This tiny tarn, covering just 0.04 hectares with dimensions of 35 by 15 metres, impresses not with its size but with its raw, untamed surroundings. Just 1.1 metres deep, it rests among massive rock blocks, and for much of the year — up to 10 months — it remains frozen solid. Its outflow is entirely underground, adding to the mystery of the place. Right above the lake, tucked among the boulders, lies a natural rock shelter that stays bitterly cold even in the height of summer. This is a place for lovers of wild, high-alpine Tatra scenery, far from crowds and marked trails.
