Tucked away in the western part of the Sucha Woda Gąsienicowa Valley at around 1,120 m above sea level, Upper Toporowy Pond is one of the Tatra Mountains' most quietly enchanting spots. Don't be fooled by its modest size — this glacial lake punches well above its weight when it comes to biodiversity and atmosphere.

The pond measures only about 30 × 15 m and reaches just 1.1 m in depth, and it is slowly transforming into a peat bog — a process that makes the surroundings all the more lush and fascinating. The marshy edges are alive with rare bog plants, and the water teems with protected amphibians including fire salamanders, Alpine newts, Carpathian newts, and yellow-bellied toads. Spring and summer bring the most colour and activity, while autumn cloaks the whole area in a moody, atmospheric stillness.

• Zakopane / Sucha Woda Gąsienicowa Valley — follow trails heading towards the Toporowy Ponds; easy difficulty. Both the Upper and Lower Toporowy Ponds are close to each other and easily reachable from the main valley trails.

• The pond lies within a strict nature reserve zone of Tatra National Park — leaving marked trails and entering the bog area is prohibited.
• Protected amphibian species inhabit the pond and its surroundings; please observe from a distance.
• A Tatra National Park entry fee applies.

In 1981, botanists discovered here the floating bur-reed — a glacial relict plant with just this single known location in the entire Polish Carpathians, making Upper Toporowy Pond a truly one-of-a-kind natural treasure.
