Upper Tomanovo Tarn is a small glacial lake tucked away in the upper reaches of the Tomanova Valley, a side branch of the Tichá Valley in the Western Tatras. This is a place for those who crave solitude far from the crowds - the tarn sits at 1597 m above sea level and is not officially accessible to hikers.

The shores are covered with grass and dwarf mountain pine, while the slopes of Liptovská Tomanová rise to the southeast and Poľská Tomanová to the southwest. Nearby, to the west, lie two sister tarns - the Small and Lower Tomanovo Tarns. The landscape here feels raw and intimate, especially beautiful in early summer when melting snow feeds the streams, and in autumn when the dwarf pine and grasses turn golden.

• Rázcestie pod Tomanovou junction - the former red-marked trail led 400 m north toward Tomanovo Saddle and the Polish border, but it was decommissioned in 2008

• The tarn is not accessible to the public - no marked trail leads to it

The tarn's outflow forms the source stream of the Tomanov Brook, which further downstream creates the picturesque Tomanovo Waterfall - worth keeping in mind when planning a hike on the accessible trails nearby.
