Velký rybník is the largest body of standing water in the Děčín district and a genuine haven for birds - a place where cranes, white-tailed eagles and red-necked grebes share the same waters. Covering over 100 hectares as a protected nature reserve, it offers a peaceful escape far from crowded trails.

The landscape is shaped by wet meadows, alder marshes and dense reed beds fringing the pond. In spring and summer the area comes alive with birdsong, blooming marsh orchids (Dactylorhiza majalis) and bogbean along the shores. In autumn the pond becomes a crucial stopover for migrating birds, while winter brings a quiet, still atmosphere over the water. Swimming is prohibited here to protect the bird population.

• Ladečka hamlet (part of Horní Podluží) - unmarked route to the dam, easy walk
• By car via Horní Podluží or through Ladečka

Practical information

• Swimming is banned to protect the bird sanctuary
• No marked hiking trail or cycle path leads directly to the pond
• A nature trail connects Velký rybník with the nearby Světlík pond
• Fishing is allowed from the dam and surrounding banks (non-trout fishing water)

In the 1970s this was one of the first modern nesting sites in Bohemia for the red-necked grebe, and today nearly 200 bird species have been recorded here, making it a true birdwatcher's paradise in northern Bohemia.
