Um den Eibsee is a compact nature reserve on the eastern edge of Chemnitz, tucked between the districts of Adelsberg and Euba. It's a place where traditional grazing and nature conservation come together beautifully around the shores of the Eibsee lake.
Covering 39 hectares, this reserve is a patchwork of open and semi-open meadows kept free from scrub thanks to grazing animals. It's a peaceful spot for a walk - the meadows burst with wildflowers in spring and summer, while the lake surroundings turn golden in autumn. Despite being so close to the city, it feels wonderfully rural and calm, a genuine escape without needing to travel far.
How to get there
Practical information
It's a rare example of traditional farming and nature conservation working hand in hand so close to a major city - proof that cows and goats can make excellent guardians of biodiversity.
