Tisícový kámen is a striking sandstone rock shelter tucked into the Polomené hory, part of the Kokořínsko - Máchův kraj Protected Landscape Area. Standing 8 metres tall and stretching 30 metres in length, this natural overhang has offered refuge to travelers for centuries.

The whole area belongs to the Ralská pahorkatina upland, specifically its Polomené hory sub-region. The sandstone ridge, cloaked mostly in pine forest, hides a whole network of rock towers, hollows and overhangs. The rock surface itself is decorated with distinctive karren grooves and honeycomb weathering patterns, giving it an almost sculptural quality. Walking here in any season feels rewarding - the pine woods hum with life in summer, while autumn light filtering through the trunks lends the place a quiet, contemplative mood. It's a favorite spot for those who enjoy combining nature walks with a touch of local history.

How to get there

• Marked turn-off from the green-marked hiking trail that runs below Vlhošť hill, passing several nearby natural monuments such as Stříbrný vrch, Husa and Kostelecké bory - the path first leads past the larger rock formation Krápník
• Road No. 260 (from Skalka u Blíževedel or Úštěk to Tuhaň) lies roughly 3 km to the west of Tisícový kámen

Legend has it that during the Thirty Years' War and the Counter-Reformation, refugees from surrounding villages hid within this rock shelter - which is said to be the origin of its name. In more peaceful times it served as a shelter for shepherds during bad weather, and in the 20th century it became a favorite bivouac spot for trampové, Czech outdoor wanderers.
