Stausee Oberwald is a scenic reservoir in Saxony that emerged from an unlikely source - a flooded former nickel mine. What was once an industrial excavation site has transformed into one of the region's favorite spots for swimming, boating and relaxing by the water.

The setting is calm and green, with gentle slopes and the surrounding Oberwald forest framing the lake's clear blue water. In summer, the shoreline buzzes with visitors enjoying the beach and water activities, while in the quieter months the lake takes on a peaceful, reflective mood perfect for a leisurely walk.

How to get there

• From Hohenstein-Ernstthal - easy access, about 20-30 minutes, located right next to the A4 motorway junction
• From Callenberg (Reichenbach or Obercallenberg) - short, easy walk or bike ride

Interesting fact: the lake sits atop what was once Central Europe's largest nickel ore deposit, and plans to turn the mine into a recreation area were already made back in 1971, years before mining even ended.
