Skalnisty Żlebek is a short but striking rocky gully hidden in the wooded slopes of Kościeliska Valley in the Western Tatras. It's a spot for hikers who like to step off the main trail and discover something wilder - here nature has carved a genuine mini-canyon with sheer rock walls.

The gully cuts deep into the terrain, forming a narrow canyon punctuated by several rocky steps. On the uppermost of these, after rain or snowmelt, water tumbles down as the impressive Sikawka waterfall, several meters high. The surroundings are fully forested, giving the place a quiet, intimate character - quite different from the open, rocky sections of the Tatras elsewhere. In spring and summer the gully comes alive with rushing water, autumn brings vivid forest colors, and in winter the icy rock steps can turn hazardous.

How to get there

• Upłaz meadow - approached through Kościeliska Valley, terrain requiring caution due to rocky steps (grade II difficulty in Tatra climbing scale)
• The waterfall and rock step can easily be bypassed on the side if you're not planning to scramble

Practical information

• Crossing the steps in the gully requires basic fitness and caution - this is not a standard tourist trail
• On older maps, including military ones, the gully is often marked incorrectly on the opposite side of the rock outcrops from its true location

Fun fact: Skalnisty Żlebek forms a natural, hidden link between Żleb pod Wysranki and Narciarski Żleb, making it a small connector within the intricate network of Tatra gullies.
