Pörgöl Cave, also known as Száraz-Gerencei Cave, is a small but fascinating cave tucked into the hillside of the Száraz-Gerence valley. If you're after a place where nature and ancient history come together, this is it - archaeological findings show that prehistoric people once used this shelter.

The cave stretches about 25 metres and sits roughly 50 metres above the valley floor, surrounded by the peaceful forests typical of the Bakony hills. It's a quiet, atmospheric spot that shelters 14 protected bat species, making it an important refuge for local wildlife. In spring and summer the woods around are alive with birdsong, autumn brings rich colours to the forest, and winter lends the trail a wild, rugged feel.

How to get there

• From Bakonybél — yellow trail (Dornyay Béla Memorial Trail), then yellow Ω trail, about 3.5 km, easy difficulty
• A paved forestry road leads to the yellow Ω marking, which takes you directly to the cave

Practical information

• The cave is home to 14 protected bat species - please stay quiet and avoid disturbing them
• It's a checkpoint for the Öreg-Bakony Bakancsosa and Magas-Bakony turistája hiking movements
