The Passeiertal is an alpine valley in South Tyrol, tucked between the Ötztal Alps and the Stubai Alps, just northeast of Merano. It's a place where dramatic mountain scenery meets a gentle valley floor, carved by the Passirio stream that eventually flows into the Adige River.

The landscape shifts dramatically with altitude - vineyards and orchards near Merano give way to meadows, forests, and eventually rugged alpine ridges near the Austrian border. Part of the valley lies within the Gruppo di Tessa Nature Park, the largest protected area in South Tyrol, promising untouched wilderness and quiet trails away from the crowds. In summer, the valley bursts with greenery and wildflowers; in autumn, forests turn golden; and in winter, snow blankets the higher reaches, perfect for snowshoeing.

How to get there

• Merano (325 m a.s.l.) - cycle path along the Passirio stream, approx. 19 km, easy difficulty, leading to San Leonardo in Passiria
• San Leonardo in Passiria (689 m a.s.l.) - starting point for further hikes deeper into the valley and toward Gruppo di Tessa Nature Park

Practical information

• The cycle path connecting Merano to San Leonardo in Passiria is mostly unpaved gravel
• The route skirts around town centers rather than passing through them
• Part of the valley falls within the Gruppo di Tessa Nature Park

Along the way you'll also find the Stieber waterfalls and the Masi dello Scudo farmsteads, while mining history enthusiasts can visit the Monteneve (Schneeberg) mine and mountain hut.
