Tucked away at 1763 m in the White Lakes Valley (Dolina Białych Stawów), Niżni Rzeżuchowy Stawek is the kind of off-the-beaten-path mountain tarn that rewards those willing to venture beyond the marked trails. Small, serene and surrounded by High Tatra scenery, it feels like a genuine hidden gem.
The tarn is modest in size — just 0.12 ha, measuring roughly 42 × 35 m and reaching a depth of about 1.5 m — but its setting more than makes up for it. Nestled in the hollow of Niżnia Rzeżuchowa Kotlina, it sits in quiet company with several other lakes in the valley, including the nearby Wyżni Rzeżuchowy Stawek and the larger Wielki Biały Staw. Summer and early autumn are the best times to visit, when the surrounding slopes are vivid green or touched with gold. Snow can linger well into spring, making access difficult early in the season.
How to get thereThe name 'Rzeżuchowy' comes from the bitter cress plant (rzeżucha gorzka), which grows abundantly around these tarns — a charming botanical detail that gives this quiet corner of the Tatras its very own identity.
