Lake Trboje is a tranquil artificial lake carved into the Sava River valley, offering a peaceful escape surrounded by steep, conglomerate cliffs and forested slopes. It's a haven for birdwatchers, anglers, and anyone looking to enjoy a quiet paddle on calm waters.
Formed in 1986 when the Sava was dammed for the Mavčiče Hydroelectric Plant, the lake now fills part of the former Zarica Gorge, giving it a dramatic, steep-banked character unlike a typical reservoir. The northern shores rise into rugged conglomerate cliffs, while alpine plants such as edelweiss cling to the slopes above the water. Villages like Trboje, Moše, and Žerjavka line the eastern shore, while Mavčiče, Praše, and Jama sit on the western side, each offering a different vantage point over the water. In spring and summer the lake buzzes with birdlife, while autumn brings golden reflections across its glassy surface.
How to get thereWith around 140 recorded bird species, Lake Trboje is one of the best birdwatching spots in the region, and its rare merganser colony makes it especially notable among Slovenian lakes.
