The Kamnik–Savinja Alps are Slovenia's wildest and most dramatic mountain range — a compact massif of rugged limestone ridges, lush alpine meadows and towering rocky summits that feels genuinely alpine without the crowds of the Western Alps. If you want raw, unspoiled mountain scenery in the heart of Central Europe, this is your place.

The landscape shifts beautifully as you gain altitude — dense forests covering about three quarters of the total area gradually give way to bare, rocky peaks and windswept ridges. The views from the top stretch across Slovenia and into Austria. Hidden beneath Mount Skuta lies the easternmost glacier of the entire Southern Alps — a small but fascinating relic of the Ice Age tucked away in this corner of Europe. In total, more than 28 peaks exceed 2,000 metres, offering plenty of ambition for every level of hiker.

• Grintovec (2,558 m) — the highest peak in the range, a rewarding challenge for experienced hikers.
• Skuta (2,532 m) — home to the easternmost glacier in the Southern Alps, a unique geological curiosity.
• Storžič (2,132 m) — a popular and visually striking summit, recognisable from great distances.
• Jezersko Pass (Seebergsattel) — a scenic mountain crossing between Slovenia and Austrian Carinthia.

• Best time to visit: June–September — trails are snow-free, days are long and conditions are ideal.
• Base towns: Kamnik, Jezersko, Solčava — all offer accommodation and easy trail access.
• Trail difficulty: wide range — from gentle valley walks to demanding ridge routes requiring experience and proper gear.
• Getting there: easiest by car from Ljubljana (around 30–40 min to Kamnik); regular bus connections to Kamnik are also available.

The western part of the range was named the Kamnik Alps as far back as 1778 by naturalists Belsazar Hacquet and Franz Xaver von Wulfen — making this one of the earliest scientifically documented mountain areas in this part of Europe.
