The Kuttenbach nature reserve is a small, quiet corner of the Ore Mountains in Saxony, where a gentle forest stream carves its way through a narrow, wooded valley. It is the kind of place hikers stumble upon while looking for solitude and end up remembering long after the trip.

The valley of the Kuttenbach stream is defined by its rocky streambed, damp meadows and shaded woodland, all combining to create a cool, humid microclimate. In summer the forest offers welcome shade, in autumn the colors turn rich and golden, and in winter snow gives the whole valley a hushed, wintry charm. The reserve forms part of a larger Natura 2000 site that also includes Moosheide and Vordere Aue, underlining its ecological importance.

How to get there

• Oberpfannenstiel (part of the town of Lauter-Bernsbach) — on foot along the stream, approx. 1-1.5 hours, easy route
• Alternatively approach from the B 169 road to the west or the S 222 to the south

Practical information

• Protected since 1986, covering 65 hectares
• Part of the FFH (Natura 2000) network — stay on marked paths
• The Vordere Aue reserve (46.4 ha) lies directly to the north and can be combined into one outing
