Külső-tó, or Outer Lake, is a small, atmospheric wetland tucked into the northern part of the Tihany Peninsula, jutting out into Lake Balaton. Rather than an open expanse of water, you'll find a lake almost entirely overgrown with reeds and aquatic plants - a quiet, wild corner that has become a haven for wildlife.

The lake sits inside the caldera of an extinct volcano, partially filled and flooded over time, giving the site a fascinating geological backstory. It has no inflow or outflow, relying purely on rainfall, which has led to gradual overgrowth over the decades. Today only a few small patches of open water remain, with the rest given over to dense reed beds and marsh vegetation. The atmosphere here is peaceful and a little wild - especially rewarding in spring and summer when birdlife is at its most active among the reeds.

How to get there

• From Tihany village - easy walking trail, approx. 20-30 minutes, flat terrain suitable for most visitors
• Can be combined with a visit to Tihany Abbey and other viewpoints on the peninsula

Practical information

• Located within the Balaton Uplands National Park (Balaton-felvidéki Nemzeti Park)
• A refuge for numerous species of water and marsh birds, as well as insects tied to aquatic habitats
• Observation from marked paths is recommended to avoid disturbing the wildlife

It's one of the few places in Hungary where you can witness firsthand a caldera lake in the process of natural overgrowth - a living example of ecological succession in miniature.
