Dwoiśniaczek is the collective name for a handful of tiny tarns tucked away in the Tatra Mountains, hidden among dwarf mountain pine in the Zielona Gąsienicowa Valley. This is a spot for those who enjoy uncovering the quieter, lesser-known corners of the Tatras - you will not find crowds here, since Dwoiśniaczek does not sit right on a marked trail.

The little ponds lie just north of Kurtkowiec, buried deep in dense dwarf pine that makes them hard to spot up close. In reality there are four of them, though older Tatra literature only described two - the remaining pair are so small they long escaped the attention of researchers. When water levels drop, the ponds can nearly dry up completely, sometimes leaving just one pool of water, or none at all. It is a modest, raw kind of place - no tourist infrastructure, but plenty of authentic high-mountain wilderness character.

How to get there

• Gąsienicowa Valley - follow the black trail toward Świnicka Przełęcz (Świnicka Pass), a demanding route that passes near the ponds (the tarns themselves do not lie directly on the trail)
• Alternatively, the ponds can be spotted from the slopes of Kościelec, which offer a wide view over the surrounding area

Practical information

• Dwoiśniaczek is not directly accessible to tourists - no marked trail leads to it
• The ponds are seasonal - at low water levels they partly or completely dry up

Interesting fact: it was only through satellite imagery analysis that researchers discovered Dwoiśniaczek actually consists of four ponds, not two, as stated in the classic Great Tatra Encyclopedia.
