Bükk National Park is Hungary's largest forested highland national park — a stunning mosaic of ancient beech forests, dramatic limestone cliffs, cascading waterfalls and over 1,100 caves waiting to be discovered. Whether you are a keen hiker, a nature lover or simply someone looking for a peaceful escape into genuine wilderness, the Bükk Hills will reward you at every turn.

The heart of the park is the Bükk Plateau, a broad upland draped in deep beech woodland where the oldest trees are over 200 years old. Jagged limestone outcrops known locally as 'kövek' — meaning 'stones' — rise dramatically from the forested slopes, offering sweeping views across the hills. Spring brings a riot of wildflowers and birdsong; the park shelters an astonishing 53 orchid species including the rare Lady's Slipper Orchid. Summer is cool and shaded under the canopy, while autumn transforms the hillsides into a blaze of gold and crimson. In winter, the plateau becomes a quiet snowscape with ski slopes and sledging runs available on the lower hillsides.

• Szilvásvárad — most popular starting point; walk the scenic 5 km Szalajka Valley (easy–moderate, approx. 2–3 hrs) to the Fátyol Waterfall and the prehistoric Istállóskő Cave.
• Lillafüred — base for guided cave visits (Anna Cave and St. Stephen Cave); approach through the dramatic Szinva gorge from Diósgyőr.
• Felsőtárkány — southern gateway to the plateau with trails of varying difficulty.

• The 'Őserdő' (Ancient Forest) is closed to visitors to protect its old-growth trees — follow the signed detour.
• Anna Cave and St. Stephen Cave in Lillafüred and the Lake Cave in Miskolctapolca are open for guided tours only — check seasonal opening hours.
• The park is strictly protected: stay on marked trails and do not pick plants.
• The famous Lipizzaner stud farm grazes its horses on the Bükk Plateau.

Did you know? The deepest cave in Hungary — Bányász Cave at 275 metres — lies within the park, and a 30,000-year-old prehistoric hearth unearthed at Istállóskő Cave is now on display at the Hungarian National Museum in Budapest.
