Bálvány is the fourth-highest peak in the Bükk Mountains, and its name harks back to Hungary's pagan past. Standing at 957 m, it's easily accessible yet rewards visitors with one of the finest panoramas in the whole region.

The peak sits on the northwestern edge of the Bükk plateau, close to Bánkút, well known for its ski slopes. The landscape is classic Bükk terrain — gentle, forested hills that turn lush green in summer and blanket in snow come winter, making the area appealing year-round. On the neighboring Felső-Borovnyák peak (945 m) stands a NATO radar station, visible from almost anywhere on the plateau, adding a striking technical landmark to the otherwise natural scenery. On Bálvány's own summit, a metal lookout tower (the Petőfi Lookout) stands beside a radio transmitter, offering a breathtaking 360-degree view over the surrounding countryside.

How to reach the summit

• Bánkút — numerous marked trails pass through the area, including the National Blue Trail (Országos Kéktúra); easy hike to the top
• The area is crisscrossed by many well-marked paths, making the summit easily reachable even for less experienced hikers
