The Bistrița Mountains are one of Romania's best-kept secrets — a sprawling, wildly beautiful range in the Eastern Carpathians where dense forests, rushing rivers and open alpine meadows combine into something truly unforgettable. If you're looking for genuine mountain wilderness without the crowds, this is your place.

Covering around 1,200 km², the range splits into two main massifs: Pietrosul Bistriței in the west and Budacu in the east. Beech forests dominate the lower slopes up to around 1,200 m, giving way to mixed woodland and then spruce, before opening onto wide grassy ridges scattered with juniper and bilberry. The Bistrița River carves dramatic valleys along the northern and eastern edges, adding a sense of scale and adventure to every hike.
