Zadnia Tomkowa Igła is a striking rock tower in the Niżnie Rysy massif, a favorite target for climbers seeking a short but rewarding route in the rocky heart of the Polish Tatras. It's the middle one of the three Tomkowe Igły towers, named in honor of the celebrated Tatra mountain guide Józef Gąsienica Tomkowy.

The tower rises along the western ridge of Zadnia Turnia in Niżnie Rysy, surrounded by the rugged, rocky scenery typical of this part of the Tatras. The views are dramatic - toward the valley and neighboring towers - with the exposed, high-mountain atmosphere of a true alpine ridge.

How to reach the summit

• Access only via rock climbing - the ascent starts from Niżnia Tomkowa Przełączka saddle, grade V, demanding and exposed terrain
• From the summit, a 20-metre rope descent leads to Wyżnia Tomkowa Przełączka, or descend via the side ridge to the south and then down a slabby wall (VI-)

Practical information

• One climbing route has been established here: the Western Ridge via the Tomkowe Igły towers
• Thanks to its short approach, it's a popular climbing destination in this part of the Tatras
• There is no marked hiking trail - this area is for experienced climbers only

The first ascent was recorded on 31 August 1935, made by Róża Drojecka, Maciej Zajączkowski and Wawrzyniec Żuławski.
