Wielka Kapałkowa Turnia is the highest point of the Kapałkowa Ridge in the Slovak High Tatras, rising to 2387 m. It's a destination for experienced mountaineers seeking wild, rarely visited corners of the Tatra landscape, far from the crowds of the marked trails.

The surroundings offer the raw, rocky scenery typical of the High Tatras — sharp ridges, deep gullies, and views over the Śnieżna Valley and Sucha Jaworowa Valley. In summer the rock warms in the sun and visibility stretches deep into the Slovak Tatras. In winter, the tower and surrounding ridges become the domain of skilled alpinists — harsh conditions and snow make the ascent far more demanding technically.

How to reach the summit

• Sucha Ławka pass — via the eastern ridge, unmarked route requiring mountaineering experience, difficulty: demanding
• Sucha Jaworowa Valley — via the western ridge, the Kapałkowe Korycisko gully, or through the walls of Kapałkowa Strażnica, technically harder routes

Practical information

• No marked tourist trails lead to the summit — access is for mountaineers with appropriate skills only
• In the lower part of the Kapałkowa Strażnica wall lies a slabby ledge called Wielki Stół (Great Table), from which the long traverse Długa Drabina leads to Srebrna Strąga
• Be aware of a misleading elevation of 2376 m appearing in some sources — it actually refers to a nearby club-shaped tower, not the main summit

The first ascensionists — Ferdynand Goetel, Walery Goetel, and Mieczysław Świerz — reached the top in the summer of 1909, while the first winter ascent didn't come until 1936, a testament to just how demanding and remote this corner of the Tatras remains.
