Velykyi Kanusiak (1642 m a.s.l.) is one of the truly wild summits of the Gorgany range — a part of the Ukrainian Carpathians famous for its untamed, trailless terrain and sweeping stone scree fields. If you are looking for a genuine off-trail adventure in the Carpathians, this conical peak delivers exactly that.

The mountain has a striking cone-shaped profile. Its slopes are cloaked in dense spruce forest up to around 1450 m, above which the trees give way to open rocky scree and thickets of mountain pine (zherepa). This transition creates a rewarding two-stage ascent — first through silent forest, then across exposed rocky terrain with open views towards neighbouring peaks: Hrofa (1748 m) to the northwest, Parenky (1735 m) to the southwest, and the closely related Malyi Kanusiak (1620 m), connected to the northeast by a ridge saddle. In summer the upper zone has a raw, alpine feel; in autumn the dwarf pine turns golden against the grey scree; in winter the summit becomes a serious undertaking for experienced mountaineers only.
