Veľká skala (912 m) is a rocky peak that stands out for its dramatic character — sheer limestone walls, wild views, and the honor of being the northeasternmost summit of the Veľká Fatra range. It's a destination for hikers who want something more rugged than a typical forest walk.

Built from limestone, the peak features rocky sections undercut by high, vertical cliffs that dominate the skyline from the valley below. The western slope, dropping steeply into the Hrabovský potok valley, is thickly forested and quite demanding, giving the area a wild, untamed feel. The eastern slope is much gentler, also forested, and descends toward the Revúcke podolie basin. To the south of the summit hide two caves — Vlčí zub and Nad Gejdákom — adding a touch of mystery to the mountain. From the top, views stretch toward Ružomberok and the surrounding valleys, and the rocky ridgeline takes on an especially rugged charm in autumn and winter.

How to reach the summit

• Kálvaria (Ružomberok) – Hrabovská dolina – Vlkolínské ľuky — blue/green trail, 3.4 km, 280 m ascent, approx. 1 h 10 min one way (55 min return), moderate difficulty
• Ružomberok – Kalvária – Veľká skala – Sidorovo — red trail along the ridge and rocky summit sections, 5.3 km, 655 m ascent, approx. 2 h 15 min one way (1 h 40 min return), demanding route

• The peak lies within the buffer zone of Veľká Fatra National Park
• The red trail crosses rocky, cliff-lined sections of the summit — requires care and good fitness
• A cycling route follows the green trail, with a second cycling route running along the eastern slopes

The rocky walls and two hidden caves, Vlčí zub and Nad Gejdákom, make Veľká skala one of the most distinctive landmarks in the Veľká Fatra mountains.
