Sorgschrofen is a striking peak in the Allgäu Alps with a quirky geographical claim to fame - it's the only place where four administrative territories from two countries meet at a single point. Climbing this mountain means combining a solid hike with a genuinely unique border experience.

The terrain is classic Allgäu limestone country - rocky ridges, steep flanks and sweeping views across the Bavarian and Tyrolean Alps. A lower summit, the Zinken (1,613 m), forms part of the same ridge and carries its own summit cross. In summer the mountain draws hikers looking for a bit of scrambling excitement, while in spring snow and ice can linger stubbornly on the exposed sections, so timing your visit matters.

How to reach the summit

• Jungholz — a ski lift covers part of the ascent, or hike to the Älpele Hut, then follow a steep path with a short rocky scramble to the top, moderate difficulty
• Unterjoch — via Zehrerhöfe, steep terrain partly secured with steel cables, a narrow rock crevice, then an exposed ridge over the Zinken to the main summit, demanding route recommended only for experienced, sure-footed hikers
