Skrajna Tomkowa Igła is a prominent rock tower within the massif of Niżnie Rysy, impressive enough that it could easily pass as a standalone peak in the Tatras. It's only its position within the massive Niżnie Rysy formation that keeps it from official summit status - a detail that makes it all the more fascinating to climbers seeking dramatic rock features.

This is a spot for those who love the raw, rocky character of the High Tatras - far from crowds, surrounded by towering walls. The western face of the tower reaches 200-400 meters in height, while its northern and north-western side drops in a steep 100-200 meter wall right above the Prawy Kocioł cirque. The terrain here is serious and technical, but even viewed from a distance, the scale of these walls is striking.

How to reach the summit

• Reaching this tower requires mountaineering experience and typically involves an approach into the Niżnie Rysy area - demanding terrain, accessible practically only to climbers

Practical information

• Two climbing routes have been established on the tower: one through the middle of the western face (grade V+, one A0 point, first ascent took about 6 hours), and a direttissima on the north-western face (grade VI-, about 3 hours)
• Thanks to its relatively short approach, the tower is a fairly popular rock climbing destination

The name honors Józef Gąsienica Tomkowy, a renowned Tatra mountain guide. The first ascent was made on 16 August 1935, and Jan Wolf, who first climbed its western face, considered the tower distinctive enough to be regarded as an independent peak.
