Schwarzkopf is a 2996 m glacier-flanked peak on the main ridge of the High Tauern, in the Venedigergruppe range. This is a destination for those seeking genuine high-alpine adventure, with glacier crossings and views across the wild border between Salzburg and East Tyrol.

The summit sits within Hohe Tauern National Park, right on the municipal boundary between Habach and Matrei in Osttirol. The surrounding landscape is rugged and glaciated — the Habachkees glacier stretches to the north, the Nördliches Viltragenkees to the south. Neighboring summits include Grünes Habach and Kratzenberg, separated from Schwarzkopf by the Schwarzkopfscharte notch. This is terrain that demands glacier experience and confident route-finding in high-mountain conditions.

How to reach the summit

• Neue Thüringer Hütte (Fürther Weg) — via the Habachkees glacier to the Habachscharte, then along the ridge over Grünes Habach and up the southwest ridge to the summit — demanding route, glacier equipment required
• Venedigerhaus — via the Nördliches Viltragenkees to the Habachscharte, joining the same ridge route to the summit

Practical information

• A hiking trail crosses the Schwarzkopfscharte east of the peak, linking the Neue Thüringer Hütte with the Alte Prager Hütte and St. Pöltner Hütte (St. Pöltner Westweg)
• Additional climbing variants include the northeast ridge (UIAA III) from the Schwarzkopfscharte, the southeast face (UIAA III) and the northeast face (UIAA IV) — for experienced climbers only
• The surrounding land on the Tyrolean side is owned by the Austrian Alpine Club (ÖAV)
