Rising to 1,957 metres above sea level just east of Oberstdorf, the Rubihorn is one of the most recognisable peaks in the Allgäu Alps. A secondary summit of the Westlicher Wengenkopf, it forms part of the Daumen group together with the neighbouring Nebelhorn — a favourite day-trip destination for hikers based in Oberstdorf.

The route up offers classic alpine scenery: rocky trails, scree fields and views over mountain lakes tucked into the valleys below. The north face bears the visible scars of a major rockfall, a striking reminder of how alive these mountains still are. In winter, that same north face transforms into one of the region's classic ice and rock climbing routes, attracting experienced mountaineers from across the Allgäu.

How to reach the summit

• Reichenbach (car park) – Gaisalpe (1165 m) – Unterer Gaisalpsee (1508 m) – summit, approx. 3.5 hours, good balance and a head for heights required
• Nebelhornbahn cable car (mid-station Vordere Seealpe, 1280 m) – Roßbichel (1465 m) – summit, a shorter option since much of the elevation gain is covered by the cable car, though the trail still demands sure footing and no fear of heights

Good to know

• On 27 September 2025, a rockfall struck the west side of the summit block, tearing away part of the path along with its cable safety lines — the trail to the summit is currently closed and impassable
• An earlier and larger rockfall in July 1987 sent between 10,000 and 15,000 m³ of debris down the north side; its traces are still clearly visible today
• The area lies within the Allgäuer Hochalpen nature reserve, where camping, fires, barbecues, drone flights and littering are all prohibited and actively monitored by authorities

Together with the Nebelhorn, the Rubihorn has long been a landmark of the Allgäu skyline, its name rooted in the region's centuries-old tradition of alpine place-naming.
