Ptakowa Turnia is a small but distinctive rocky tower in the Kraków Gorge (Wąwóz Kraków), deep in the Western Tatras. It's a spot for those who appreciate the wild, rugged side of the Tatras, far from the crowded main trails.

The tower drops away in a steep slope, partly forested and partly rocky-grassy with small rock walls, down toward the Rynek and the Upłazkowy Kocioł basin. At its base lies an unusual rock formation – a huge recess filled with boulders known as the Kościół (Church) – an impressive sight for anyone who makes it there. Its walls also hide the Jaskinia pod Okapem cave. The surroundings have a raw, alpine character – lush and green in summer, but transformed in winter into dangerous, avalanche-prone terrain suitable only for experienced climbers.

How to reach the summit

• Ptakowa Turnia is not a hiking destination in itself – there is no marked tourist trail leading here
• Access is possible only as part of mountaineering, via the lower section of the climbing route to Upłazkowa Turnia through Ptakowy Przechod

• The section of the route crossing Ptakowa Turnia is graded I (via the ridge above the Kościół) or III (via the gully above the Kościół)
• This terrain is intended only for climbers with appropriate mountaineering skills and experience
• Ptakowa Turnia is separated from the Upłazkowa Turnia and Gładka Turnia massifs by the Ptakowy Przechod

The mysterious Kościół rock formation at its base makes Ptakowa Turnia one of the more intriguing corners of the Kraków Gorge, known mainly among seasoned Tatra climbers.
