The Österreichischer Schinder is a striking peak with a rocky north face, standing as the main summit of the Schinder group in the Tegernsee Mountains within the Mangfall range. Its ridge marks the border between Bavaria and Tyrol, making this one of the more distinctive borderline peaks in the Bavarian Alps.

From the summit cross, the panorama stretches from the Kaisergebirge in the east, across the Großglockner, Großvenediger and Zillertal Alps to the south, all the way to the Zugspitze in the west. The terrain is rugged and rocky, with a wild alpine character, especially around the neighboring Bayerischer Schinder (1796 m), a subsidiary summit lying entirely within Bavaria and connected by an exposed ridge. Snowfields can linger in the Schinderkar well into summer, adding a wintry touch to the rocky scenery even in warmer months.

• From Valepp via the Trausnitzalm and the south ridge — good mountain trail, about 2.5 hours, easy difficulty
• Via the Schinderkar, the Schindertor and the Fensterl — demanding route requiring good balance and no fear of heights, with exposed rock and scree sections

• The Bayerischer Schinder can be reached in around 30 minutes from the main summit via an exposed connecting ridge
• Two further paths (from Bayr-Alm via Rieselbergalm and Ritzelbergalm, and from Erzherzog-Johann-Klause) are marked but very lonely and rarely walked
• Snowfields in the Schinderkar can persist well into the year

Standing at the summit, you're literally straddling two countries — a rare border crossing that rewards hikers with one of the widest Alpine panoramas around.
