Ociemny Wierch is a fir-forested hump hidden in the heart of the Pieniny Mountains, tucked into the Pieninki ridge between the Burzana and Kurnikówka saddles. This is a spot for hikers who want to explore the wilder, quieter side of Pieniny National Park, away from the crowds heading for Trzy Korony.

The character of this ridge is defined by rocky, steep walls that drop on the southern side into the valley of the Pieniński Potok stream — reaching up to 20 metres in height in places. The north-eastern slope splits into two arms, separated by the Żłobina gully, creating a compact, dissected landscape full of rocky ledges and ravines. The forest holds a cool, damp microclimate, and in spring and summer the surrounding slopes hide real botanical treasures. In winter the trail can be demanding due to steep, icy sections.

How to reach the summit

• Szczawnica — blue trail (Droga Pienińska, via the ferry crossing at Nowy Przewóz), continuing along the Sokola Perć ridge trail through Sokolica, Czertezik and Czerteż; a demanding route due to steep, rocky stretches

• Crossing the Dunajec River requires a ferry at Nowy Przewóz — check operating hours in advance
• The area lies within Pieniny National Park — nature protection rules apply
• In the Pod Ociemne valley lies the Jaskinia w Ociemnem cave, discovered in 1976, the longest and most interesting cave in the Polish Pieniny (not open to casual visitors without special permission)
• The southern slopes hold another cave, Walusiowa Jama

At an elevation of 460–500 m, this slope holds one of Poland's largest populations of the rare, protected Scopolia carniolica — a plant well worth watching for as you wander through the fir forest.
