Krížava (1,457 m a.s.l.) is one of the most distinctive summits in the Lúčanská Malá Fatra range — a broad, open-topped mountain instantly recognisable by the broadcasting towers on its crest. It rewards hikers with some of the widest panoramas in the region, making every step of the ascent worthwhile.

The summit plateau is expansive and largely free of forest, covered in dwarf pine and bilberry shrubs that glow deep red in autumn and hold snow beautifully in winter. On a clear day the views stretch to the High Tatras, Low Tatras, Veľká Fatra, the Orava Beskids and many more ranges, while the Turiec and Žilina basins spread out far below. Only to the south does the bulk of Veľká lúka (1,476 m) partially interrupt the horizon. The mountain sits at the heart of the Martinské hole — the highest and most scenic ridge of Lúčanská Fatra — and the long-distance trail E3 passes right across its top.

How to reach the summit

• From Turí via Skalka — red trail, moderate difficulty
• From Martin-Stráne — blue trail, approach from the east
• From Kunerad via Veľká lúka — green trail, moderate difficulty
• Along the main ridge from Veľká lúka or Zázrivá — red trail, ridge walk
• By road from Martin to Chata na Martinských holiach, then yellow trail to the top

Practical information

• The summit area is partly taken up by the fenced Krížava broadcasting and air-traffic control station — access to the very top is limited around the installation.
• The Winter Park Martinky ski resort operates on the eastern slopes, making the area well accessible in winter as well.
• The international long-distance hiking route E3 crosses the summit.

Few visitors realise that Krížava is known across Europe not only as a hiking destination — the air-traffic control facility on its peak plays a quietly vital role in managing flight routes over Central Europe.
