Kleiner Hundstod is the quieter sibling of the mighty Großer Hundstod, sitting entirely on Austrian soil and offering a rewarding escape from the crowds that gather on its taller neighbor. At 2263 m, it's a fine target for hikers wanting a genuine taste of the Steinernes Meer's rugged character.

Part of the Steinernes Meer massif in the Berchtesgaden Alps, this peak rises above a stark, stony high plateau typical of the range. It's separated from Großer Hundstod by the Hundstodscharte saddle at 2210 m. From the surrounding ridgeline, views stretch across the barren limestone plateau toward the Hochkönig, the Loferer Steinberge, and the distant Hohe Tauern. In summer the terrain is dry, rocky, and exposed; in winter it becomes a serious alpine undertaking demanding proper equipment and experience.

• Ingolstädter Haus — via Großer Hundstod and the Hundstodscharte saddle, steep and rocky terrain, sure-footedness required, demanding route
• Ingolstädter Haus is reached from Dießbachstausee (approx. 4 hours), from Königssee via Kärlingerhaus (approx. 6 hours), or from Ramsau via Wimbachgrieshütte and Hundstodgatterl (approx. 6 hours)

The name Hundstod ('dog's death') has sparked plenty of legend, from tales of Watzmann's petrified hounds to more mundane theories about exhausted hunting dogs on these unforgiving slopes.
