Standing just 17 metres tall, Kelchstein might sound modest — but among climbers in the Zittau Mountains it has a reputation as a true giant. This distinctive mushroom-shaped rock (Pilzfelsen) near Oybin is part of the Kelchsteine natural monument and draws in hikers and hardcore climbers alike.

Formed from a low-binder Cretaceous sandstone, Kelchstein owes its curious mushroom shape to centuries of wind erosion working unevenly on layers of varying hardness. The surrounding landscape is classic Zittau Mountains territory — dense forest, rocky labyrinths, and that quiet, dreamy atmosphere of the Saxon-Czech borderland. In summer the rock glows against the greenery, in autumn golden leaves frame it beautifully, and in winter a dusting of frost turns the sandstone almost magical.

How to reach the summit

• Oybin — local trails leading to the Kelchsteine area, easy to moderate walk, approx. 30–45 minutes
• Actually climbing to the top of Kelchstein itself is a different matter entirely — it requires proper climbing gear and experience

Practical information

• Kelchstein is considered the most technically demanding climbing summit in the entire Zittau Mountains
• Only five climbing routes exist, rated VIIc and VIIIc — for advanced climbers only
• The first documented ascent dates back to before 1785, made by woodcutters
• The first clean ascent without artificial aids wasn't achieved until 26 June 1946

Though modest in height, Kelchstein's reputation among climbers makes it a true legend of the Zittau Mountains — a small sandstone colossus that demands genuine respect.
