Kapellenberg is a modest hill northeast of the village of Schmiedefeld in Saxony, Germany, but don't let its small size fool you - it's packed with history and a good dose of local legend. At just 323 metres, it's an easy and rewarding destination for anyone exploring the Bautzen district.

The hill is covered in forest, offering a shaded, quiet walk through the trees rather than sweeping panoramic views. It has a calm, almost secretive character - the kind of place where you can imagine old soldiers and treasure-guarding monks lurking in the undergrowth. In summer the woods offer welcome shade, while in winter the quiet paths take on a peaceful, wintry stillness.

The name Kapellenberg comes from a Marian chapel built here around 1200, which later disappeared. Local legend also tells of a huge treasure of gold and jewels hidden inside the hill, guarded by a small grey-bearded monk.
