Jastrzębia Turnia (2,138 m a.s.l.) is one of the most striking rock towers in the High Tatras — a near-vertical spire soaring above the Green Lake Valley (Dolina Zielonego Stawu). Wrapped in legend and endlessly photogenic, it rewards every visitor with views across some of the most dramatic walls in the entire Tatra range.

There is something almost theatrical about this peak. Its south-eastern and southern faces drop almost sheer into the valley below, while from the summit the panorama stretches across the mightiest Tatra walls. The tower changes character with the seasons — icy and austere in winter, vivid against autumn colours, and bathed in warm light on clear summer evenings. It is the kind of place that stays with you long after you have left the mountains.

• The peak lies on the Slovak side of the Tatras — a valid TANAP entry permit and compliance with Slovak national park regulations are required
• The nearby Chata pri Zelenom plese hut makes an excellent base for the approach
• Rockfall on the south-eastern face has destroyed some older climbing routes — check current conditions before attempting technical lines
• The tower hosts some of the hardest rock climbs in the Tatras, including 'Koróna' (XI-, 2016), considered the most difficult route in the entire range

Legend has it that a blinding gemstone — a carbuncle — once rested on the summit, luring treasure-seekers to their doom. The tale may echo the real tragedy of gold-seeker Ján Andrej Papirus, who perished near the Green Lake in 1771.
