The Werfener Hochthron is the third-highest and arguably one of the most distinctive peaks in the Tennengebirge range of the Northern Limestone Alps. Rising at the southern edge of the vast karst plateau, it drops away on all sides in steep rock faces - making it a favorite target for climbers.

The summit cross offers a sweeping panorama across the entire Pongau region and toward the towering Hochkönig opposite. What's truly remarkable is the elevation difference between the summit and the town of Werfen in the Salzach valley below - a striking 1800 meters. How to reach the summit

• South ridge (Südgrat) - the standard route, graded III- UIAA, marked and secured with ropes at two sections; suitable only for experienced climbers with sure footedness and a head for heights
