Großer Galtenberg is the highest peak of the Alpbachtal valley and the entire Kufstein district, rising to 2424 m in the Kitzbühel Alps. Thanks to its exposed position and relatively easy access, it has become one of the most popular viewpoint mountains in the region.
The summit lies entirely within the municipality of Alpbach, directly across from the well-known Alpbach ski area on Wiedersberger Horn and Schatzberg. From the top, hikers are rewarded with sweeping panoramas over the Kitzbühel Alps, including the neighboring Kleiner Galtenberg (2318 m), linked to the main summit by the Galtenbergjoch saddle. The mountain's character shifts with the seasons - a quiet ridge walk in summer, while spring and autumn hikers should expect lingering snow patches higher up.
How to reach the summitWith its wide-open views and accessible trails, Großer Galtenberg has long been regarded as one of the finest lookout mountains in the Kitzbühel Alps.
