The area around Goßkopf is dominated by rugged high mountains - the highest nearby summit reaches 2,899 metres, just a kilometre to the south. Population density here is low, reinforcing the wild, remote character of the landscape. Grassy slopes give way to bare rock and patches of permanent ice, while winter blankets the whole massif in deep snow. The climate is harsh and boreal, with an average annual temperature around -5°C. July is the warmest month at about 8°C, while January plunges to -16°C. Rainfall is generous year-round, peaking in August.
