Filipionka is a modest, forested hill in the Silesian Beskids that hides a real surprise for a peak of its size — an impressive rock outcrop stretching some 80 meters. It's a great pick for hikers who enjoy uncovering the mountains' quieter, lesser-known corners away from the crowds.

The hill rises from the southern slopes of the ridge dividing the Vistula and Olza rivers, west of Karolówka, below the Istebna hamlet of Pietraszonka. The summit itself is covered in forest, so don't expect sweeping panoramas — instead you get an intimate, almost mysterious atmosphere, especially once you reach the rocky outcrops. The woods come alive in spring and summer, blaze with color in autumn, and the snow-dusted rock walls look particularly striking in winter.

How to get to the summit

• Istebna (Pietraszonka hamlet) — moderate difficulty, time depends on hiking pace
• Route along the ridge connecting the Barania Góra and Skrzyczne range with the Stożek and Czantoria range

Practical information

• The main attraction is the rock outcrop on the north side, just below the summit — a line of rocky ledges up to about 10 m high, in places arranged in two tiers
• The rocks reveal fascinating geology: conglomerates containing fragments of gneiss and mica schist, plus sandstones sparkling with flakes of muscovite mica
• At the base of the outcrop you can spot erosion features typical of the Carpathian flysch — crevices, deep niches and small chimney-like hollows

The hill's name comes from the tiny Filipionka settlement — literally a single farmstead — sitting on a clearing on its south-western slopes above the Olza valley, proof that even the smallest spot on the map can lend its name to an entire mountain.
