Baraniec (2,182 m a.s.l.) is the third highest peak in the Western Tatras on the Slovak side — a commanding, open-topped massif rising above the Žiarska Valley and offering some of the most sweeping 360-degree views in the entire range. If you want a proper high-mountain experience without the crowds of the High Tatras, this is your mountain.

The summit area is a mix of alpine grassland and rock, completely open to the sky. On a clear day you can see the High Tatras, the Podtatranská Basin, the Malá and Veľká Fatra ranges, the Low Tatras, and — on the best days — as far as the Orava Magura and the Chočské vrchy hills. Summer brings green ridges and long visibility; autumn turns the slopes golden; winter transforms the massif into a quiet, snow-covered wilderness best left to experienced mountaineers.

Baraniec is a true 'node peak' — ridges radiate from its summit in multiple directions, including southeast toward Malý Baranec (2,044 m) and southwest toward Holý vrch, making it a natural hub for longer ridge-walking adventures in the Western Tatras.
