The Ahornspitze rises to 2,976 m in the Zillertal Alps, standing proudly above Mayrhofen in Tyrol, Austria. With two summits - the lower North Peak (2,960 m) bearing the summit cross and the higher South Peak (2,973 m) - this exposed mountain at the northern end of the Ahornkamm ridge has earned a reputation as one of the finest viewpoints in the area.

Although the Ahornspitze carries no glacier, a steep névé field known as the Schneekarl still clings to its eastern flank. The terrain around the peak is shaped by several cirques dropping toward the Zillergrund valley, while the western side falls away through the Popbergkar into the Stilluptal. On clear late-summer days the mountain draws crowds, yet it retains the feel of genuine high-alpine terrain with sweeping panoramas in every direction.

How to reach the summit

• Karl-von-Edel-Hütte (2,238 m) - via the Föllenbergkar, approx. 2-3 hours, easy to moderate, one rope-secured section rated UIAA I between the two summits
• Alternative route via the Popbergschneide, reached along the Berliner Höhenweg or via Filzenkogl and Filzenschneid, with longer UIAA I sections

Practical information

• The Ahornbahn cable car from Mayrhofen (built 1968, rebuilt 2006) reaches Filzenboden at 1,965 m, cutting the approach to Karl-von-Edel-Hütte to just 1-1.5 hours
• This makes the Ahornspitze an easy one-day tour from Mayrhofen
• Loose rock and rockfall risk exist along the southwest ridge

The first documented ascent took place on 1 September 1840, and remarkably, the local mountain guide climbed barefoot - a detail still remembered as one of the mountain's most memorable stories.
