For a quiet detour into medieval history, the Ebersbrunn water castle site offers a peaceful stop where a fortified stronghold once stood. First mentioned in a document from 1303, this former moated castle has long since vanished, leaving only earthworks behind.

The site sits in the damp meadowlands of the Pleiße river, right in the middle of Ebersbrunn village, surrounded by several small tributary streams. The atmosphere here is gentle and rural rather than dramatic - green fields, slow-moving water, and a sense of calm that makes it easy to imagine how remote this spot once felt. In spring and summer the surrounding grasslands are lush and inviting for a short walk, while in autumn the low-lying, moist terrain gives the place a quiet, mist-touched character.

• Registered as an archaeological monument (Bodendenkmal) on 15 August 1958
• Only a mound and a moat remain of the original structure - no standing walls or buildings

No towers or walls survive today, but standing on the mound and tracing the old moat is a nice reminder that a fortified home once rose here, guarding the marshy banks of the Pleiße some 700 years ago.
