Perched on a rocky rise known as Gallows Hill, just above the road linking Děčín to Hřensko, this abandoned church tells a story stranger than most ruins you'll find on a hike. It's not a typical hiking destination, but for anyone drawn to forgotten places and layered history, it's a fascinating stop near Kvádrberk.

The pseudo-Romanesque nave with its stark modern tower now stands roofless and bricked up, a shell left behind after a fire in 1989. There's a quiet, melancholic atmosphere here, especially in autumn and winter when bare trees reveal the rocky slope beneath the building. From the hill you get glimpses over the northern edge of Děčín and the wooded slopes rising toward Kvádrberk.

How to get there

• Northern edge of Děčín — short walk from the Děčín–Hřensko road, easy, about 15-20 minutes
• Can be combined with a walk up to Kvádrberk hill, which the church borders

• The building has been privately owned since 2008 — only exterior viewing is possible
• Windows and entrance have been bricked up since 2002-2004; the roof has been missing since the 1989 fire
• The hill is called Gallows Hill (Šibeniční/Popravčí vrch), 157 m above sea level

Over the decades the church passed through many hands - Old Catholics, Czechoslovak Hussites, Orthodox resettlers from the USSR, even a folk-furniture storage depot for a local museum - before fire finally sealed its fate.
