Schloss Tirol above Merano is the ancestral castle of the Counts of Tyrol and the birthplace of the County of Tyrol itself. It's regarded as one of the largest and best-preserved high-medieval secular buildings in the Alps, and it served as the residence of Tyrol's rulers for centuries before the seat moved to Innsbruck.

Perched on a hill above the Meran basin, the castle offers sweeping views over vineyards, orchards and the surrounding mountains. The mild, almost Mediterranean climate of the Meran area means the surrounding slopes stay green well into autumn, while winter brings a striking contrast between the stone walls and snow-capped peaks beyond. Walking through its courtyards and climbing the keep feels like stepping straight into the region's medieval past.

In March 1347, Margaret of Tyrol successfully defended the castle against Charles of Luxembourg, later Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV — a moment still remembered as one of the castle's proudest chapters.
