Perched on a rocky plateau roughly 70 metres above the River Elbe, Sonnenstein Castle in Pirna is one of Saxony's most layered historic sites — a former medieval fortress, a pioneering psychiatric institution, and a sobering memorial all rolled into one remarkable hilltop. Visitors are rewarded with sweeping views over Saxon Switzerland and a beautifully restored ensemble of terraced gardens and ancient bastions.

The hillside has a quietly compelling atmosphere at any time of year. In spring the terraced gardens bloom with colour, in summer the stone walls provide cool shade, and in autumn the surrounding woodland turns golden against the grey fortifications. The terrain is gentle and well-maintained, making it a pleasant outing for walkers of all ages and fitness levels. On clear days the panorama stretches across the Elbe valley towards the sandstone peaks of Saxon Switzerland.

It was right here in 1372 that Emperor Charles IV signed a historic border treaty between Bohemia and Meissen, and in 1811 Sonnenstein opened as one of Germany's first modern psychiatric hospitals — a story of humanity and tragedy that makes this hilltop far more than just a pretty view.
